'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' just broke Hollywood's biggest box office record, but the numbers reveal a more complicated story about what 'biggest' really means.

"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has officially taken the top spot in the domestic box office, breaking the all-time record once held by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

After 47 days in theaters, Tom Holland’s fourth solo film as Peter Parker grossed $936.773 million domestically, surpassing “The Force Awakens’” $936 million benchmark.

Globally, the Marvel film ranks third, earning $2.45 billion, trailing 2009’s “Avatar,” which still reigns as the highest-grossing movie of all time globally with $2.9 billion, and its runner-up, “Avengers: Endgame,” with $2.7 billion.

Though "Spider-Man: Brand New Day” made more money than any other domestic release ever, that doesn't mean more people actually watched it in theaters.

According to Forbes, when adjusted for today's higher ticket prices, “Brand New Day” still reflects lower attendance compared to “The Force Awakens.” While “Brand New Day” sold 73.7 million tickets domestically with an average price of $12.75, “The Force Awakens” sold an estimated 108.1 million tickets when it was released.

However, neither film can match the number of tickets 1939’s “Gone With the Wind” sold. The classic film, which remains the leader in domestic attendance, sold 202.2 million tickets during its time, estimated at $2.3 billion today. According to Forbes, this can be attributed to the long theatrical runs, frequent revivals, and lack of competition from streaming, gaming and other forms of entertainment that classic films once enjoyed.

Meanwhile, modern cinema can now bank on various formats, such as IMAX, Dolby Cinema, ScreenX and 4DX, which charge more and accounted for 24% of the film’s record-breaking $360 million domestic opening weekend, a number, Forbes said, could have been even higher if "The Odyssey” did not have an exclusive hold on IMAX at the time.

Spider-Man's popularity can be attributed to its large fanbase spanning generations. The film appeals to millennials, the younger Gen Z audiences, as well as families and longtime comic book fans.

The franchise is expected to continue earning through streaming and merchandising. Between 2020 and 2025, the Spider-Man franchise generated an estimated $940 million in streaming revenue alone. "Brand New Day" is set to stream exclusively on Netflix for 18 months before eventually moving to Disney+.

"Destin is a very special human, a deeply thoughtful visionary mind, a brilliant filmmaker in its truest sense and a marvelous storyteller," said Sanford Panitch, Sony Pictures' motion picture group president.

Cretton's new deal doesn't cover directing, but Sony is reportedly looking forward to having him direct a sequel to “Brand New Day.” In the meantime, his next project will be a live-action adaptation of "Naruto" for Lionsgate, expected to begin filming early next year.
