In its early stages, the project, which will also be co-produced by Stacey Sher of “Pulp Fiction” and “Erin Brockovich,” still doesn’t have a cast or screenwriter.
Reports reveal that the studio and filmmakers are hoping Hudson and her original leading man, Matthew McConaughey, will reprise their roles as Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry. Casting will generally depend on the way the script will go, which, for now, has yet to be developed.

The 2003 film, directed by Donald Petrie, grossed nearly $180 million worldwide on a $50 million budget. The film remains a rom-com staple, and its potential sequel is well-timed, what with the bandwagon of Y2K revivals currently making box office waves. Think “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” “Scary Movie” and “Toy Story 5,” with “Practical Magic 2” and “Focker-In-Law” also on the way.

During an Instagram Live marking the film's 20th anniversary in 2023, Hudson and McConaughey spoke about their on-screen chemistry. Both recalled that most of their kissing scenes were shot under chaotic conditions, including sharks, plane falls, and open water, and only one scene, set in a bathroom, was filmed under calmer circumstances.
“But, in respect to our now partners, we do kiss nicely. It was always a very nice kiss,” Hudson admitted, to which McConaughey agreed.
Both also credited their improvisational rapport and shared sense of humor for the film's lasting appeal.
