Jelly Roll Addresses His Political Views in ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’ Monologue After Grammys Controversy

The country star used his time behind the desk to clear the air after months of public scrutiny over his silence at the ceremony. His remarks touched on fear, honesty, and what he believes the American dream should really mean.

Jelly Roll is setting the record straight. During his latest turn hosting "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," the singer finally addressed the backlash over his silence on politics at this year's Grammy Awards.

While several of his peers used the Los Angeles ceremony back in February to voice their political views — most notably condemning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations — Jelly Roll opted to stay quiet, a decision that drew immediate criticism.

The 41-year-old artist, who has been filling in for Kimmel, 58, on the late-night show this week, revealed in his Thursday, August 27 address that he was eager to use the platform to get "some very personal stuff" off his chest.

"For the last six months, I've watched people decide who I am, what I am, what I believe, what I support, and what I don't support. And I felt that even more this week, just because I told a couple of jokes," he continued, referencing recent jabs he's made at President Donald Trump.

He traced the speculation over his politics back to February 1, when he took home three Grammy Awards. Seven months later, Jelly Roll called the win the "greatest honor" of his career, reflecting, "I got handed an award that I've been dreaming about since I was a child."

"And immediately after, I was asked to make what I felt at the time was a political stance," he added. Jelly Roll, born Jason DeFord, admitted he "fumbled" his words in the moment and wished he'd "found the words" to share his perspective sooner.

"But I was afraid that anything I was going to say was going to be immediately taken as a political statement," he continued.

He went on, "That night at the Grammys, I had an opportunity to speak up for people who were scared, hurting, and felt like nobody was speaking for them. I had a microphone and I didn't use it the right way."

He added, "I got to stand on that stage that night and win a Grammy. And that is the American dream... the American dream should be for everybody."
