Stephen King Praises Mike Flanagan's New 'Carrie' Adaptation Ahead of Its Release

Fifty years after "Carrie" first hit shelves, author Stephen King is weighing in on the latest attempt to bring it to screen, and he's not holding back the praise.

Stephen King’s 1974 novel, “Carrie,” has been adapted for television again, earning the author’s approval ahead of its release.

The supernatural miniseries, which premieres on Prime Video on October 7, got a positive reaction from King, who wrote on Threads, writing, “Mike Flanagan's version of CARRIE is brilliant. What it has to say about social media is shocking and true.”

Likewise, King's son, author Joe Hill, praised the series after seeing its trailer. "I was watching this trailer for Carrie on Instagram and thinking how good it looks and suddenly found myself fighting back tears," he also wrote on Threads. "Never had that happen before, watching a preview... Looks so good tho, Mike Flanagan sure can make em."

In the new adaptation, Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, a teenager who grows up in isolation under the protective watch of her mother, Margaret, played by Samantha Sloyan. When Carrie’s father dies suddenly, she is forced into public high school, where she becomes the subject of a viral bullying scandal. As she navigates adolescence, she also discovers she has telekinetic powers.

Flanagan’s "Carrie" is the latest adaptation following others before it, beginning with Brian De Palma’s original 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek. A sequel was also developed in 1999, followed by a 2002 TV movie, and a 2013 remake starring Chloë Grace Moretz.
